What are Standard Operating Processes (SOP)

Standard Operating Processes are widely used standards and practices that all organizations use to ensure quality, compliance, and uniformity. The Traker – Standard Operational Processes document defines a standardized, end-to-end operating model for purchasing, inventory management, pricing, reporting, and waste control across Compass Group locations, positioning Traker as the system of record. Its intent is to ensure operational consistency, financial accuracy, and compliance by formalizing how products are requested, purchased, received, costed, reported, and adjusted throughout the product lifecycle. The document clarifies Compass Group’s costing methodology (LIFO) while reinforcing best practices for physical inventory management, pricing reviews, and weighted-average adjustments during price fluctuations to protect inventory value. It also establishes clear expectations for oversight of reporting and spoilage tracking to support cost control, auditability, and data-driven decision-making, while explicitly discouraging reliance on manual tools that undermine visibility and governance.

Key Characteristics of SOPs

  • Standardization: They provide a consistent way to complete tasks.

  • Clarity: Written in clear, easy-to-follow language.

  • Compliance: Help meet regulatory or organizational requirements.

  • Efficiency: Reduce errors and improve productivity.

Why Are SOPs Important?

  • Ensure quality control across teams.

  • Facilitate training for new employees.

  • Reduce risk by minimizing mistakes.

  • Provide a reference point for audits and process improvement.
